Sustainable investment continues to dominate ETFs

We have a survey from the Index Industry Association this week, entitled ‘Measurable Impact: Asset Managers on the Challenges and Opportunities of ESG Investment’, and which reveals that as global demand for ESG investment strategies continues to increase, asset managers question their ability to keep up with demand as they grapple with the issue of how to better define and measure sustainable investments.

“Better corporate data leads to better benchmarks, which allows asset managers to offer better investment products,” says Rick Redding, CEO of IIA. “The survey highlights that, while there is growing global demand for ESG investment products, a lack of corporate data reporting standardisation and the complex array of ESG reporting organisations leaves ESG investors wanting more clarity about the available investment products.”

Germany’s Deutsche Börse has also observed a growth in demand for sustainable products, with trading volumes in sustainable investment products tripling in assets since 2019. ESG ETFs recorded growth of an astonishing 251 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2021. "For many investors, ESG ETFs are the way to go if they want to invest sustainably," says Stephan Kraus, Head of the ETF & ETP segment at Deutsche Börse.

We also bring you an interview with Hector McNeil, joint founder and CEO of HANetf, Europe’s first ETF white labelling firm, detailing the growth of the company since launch in 2018, with assets reaching USD2.6 billion briefly at the height of the cryptocurrency boom, and now sitting at around USD2 billion. The firm is set to bring its offering to the US, looking to represent non-US ETF issuers in the US markets.
In addition, we have two interviews with new ETF issuers, Iconic Funds, with its physical bitcoin ETP, and Dawn Global, which has launched an active, thematic ETF investing in the frontier markets, with a particular focus on those that are hard to reach, such as Vietnam and Bangladesh.

This week sees voting open in the popular ETF Express US ETF awards, in partnership with Bloomberg. To register your votes, please follow this link .
