Simon Klein, global head of passive sales at DWS, has published a note on the performance of the Xtrackers range over 2020. He writes that Xtrackers globally reached EUR132 billion in AUM, up 16 per cent compared with 2019. Net new assets were EUR15 billion, with impressive gains of EUR5 billion achieved globally in ESG ETF inflows.

Highlights of the firm’s European UCITS platform’s performance included the fact that, overall, UCITS ETF flow share, (Xtrackers flows as a percentage of market flows overall), was 14 per cent in 2020 (3 per cent above market share), due, Klein says, to strong participation in both equity and fixed income asset classes. This raises the firm’s overall market share in Europe by 0.6 per cent to 11 per cent.

Xtrackers’ UCITS equity ETF flow share has increased from 9 per cent in 2019 to 15 per cent in 2020, taking AUM in this segment from EUR71 billion to EUR81 billion. The firm’s UCITS fixed income ETF flow share increased from 8 per cent in 2019 to 13 per cent in 2020, taking AUM in this segment from EUR 20 billion to EUR 24.5 billion.

Looking specifically at European-listed UCITS ESG ETFs, the firm’s overall market share in this segment increased by 5 per cent to 8 per cent, as total AUM in this part of the market crossed the EUR5 billion threshold.

The US business also enjoyed growth with the Xtrackers 40-Act range reaching a record new level of USD21 billion in US-listed Xtrackers ETFs. Within that, the ESG ETF range in the US broke through USD3 billion in AUM, with almost USD1 billion in inflows.

The US-listed USD high-yield ETF AUM reached USD7.5 billion, with more than USD3 billion inflows in 2020. This represents a flow share of 16 per cent, with market share in this segment increasing to 12 per cent.
