Hedgemedia's AltInvestment Global News Round-Up: Martello fails to surmount growth hurdle
Fri, 16 May 2008, 05:59 ETFexpress Fund-of-funds manager Martello Investment Management of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, is liquidating. The firm advises on USD750m of assets in global macro, quantitative and relative value investments but failed to generate 'sufficient asset growth' in its USD250m hedge fund portfolio despite delivering positive yearly returns since its launch in 2002. David McCarthy, a GAM alumnus who ran Martello with nine other professionals, plans to wind down the firm over the course of the summer. The firm also maintained an office in London.
Advisers turn to ETFs that track industries
Fri, 16 May 2008, 01:26 Investors.com/Investor's Business Daily Sector-focused ETFs are showing strong inflow as advisers buy them instead of stocks. Tony Rochte, senior managing director at State Street Global Advisors, says the assets of broad-based ETFs are down because of the broader market. All three major indexes show losses since Jan. 1, though they have all risen since hitting bottom in March. But that isn't the case for industry-based ETFs. According to TrimTabs' estimates, sector ETFs have seen inflow of USD11.12 billion year to date.
Tech ETF benefits from Yahoo deal
Thu, 15 May 2008, 21:43 Smart Money Carl Icahn's Yahoo play, the deal for CNET and some analyst upgrades of other names made for a decent day for tech ETFs. Seven out of the top 10 most active stocks were tech-related. ProShares Ultra Technology (ROM: 71.76, +2.95, +4.28%) gained 3.8%. The ProShares Ultra QQQ (QLD: 90.60, +3.41, +3.91%), an ETF that tracks the tech-heavy Nasdaq, gained 3.4%. Both of those funds try to post double the returns of the underlying indexes.

Wisdom Tree puts forth new ETF shoots, but shows some earnings blight
Thu, 15 May 2008, 21:10 Seekign Alpha ETF provider WisdomTree (WSDT.PK) and Dreyfus Corporation announced the launch of four currency income ETFs yesterday based on the Chinese Yuan (CYB), Indian Rupee (ICN), Brazilian Real (BZF) and the Euro (EU), with a Japanese (JYF) one in the pipeline. Investing in these funds would be similar to investing in money market funds in these countries. As discussed in the recent Fortune article titled Is Your Money Fund Safe?, most money market funds maintain a constant share price like USD1 and the firms running these funds go to great lengths to ensure that the share price does not drop.
Solar ETFs glimmer with the help of high oil prices
Thu, 15 May 2008, 20:15 ETF Trends Solar exchange traded funds (ETFs) appear to be basking in the sun as ever-rising energy prices are sending people looking for less expensive alternatives. Two companies of interest are JA Solar (JASO) and Evergreen Solar (ESLR) who have experienced high first-quarter earnings. Market Vectors Solar (KWT) and Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (TAN) are up 7.7% and 9.5% respectively so far this week.
Investors dive into water ETFs
Thu, 15 May 2008, 19:37 Smart Money ITT (ITT: 66.68, +0.11, +0.16%) is well known as a maker of the technology behind modern warfare, from night-vision equipment to radar that detects low-flying cruise missiles to sensors that pick up chemical and biological agents. Some investors may not realize, though, the company makes 39% of its revenues, or $3.5 billion in 2007, from a more mundane industry: water. While soldiers rely heavily on ITT's products on the battlefield, millions of consumers and businesses count on the company's pumps and valves to get H20 to their faucets and factory floors.
ETFs for the global infrastructure boom
Thu, 15 May 2008, 18:48 Motley Fool Here's a novel source for investment ideas: Look at what Russian thieves are stealing. According to Reuters, Russia has seen an upsurge in thefts of cement mixers, dump trucks, and cranes in response to a boom in construction and infrastructure spending. One thief stole an asphalt paver in broad daylight. That's not the only sign that infrastructure spending around the world is booming. Developed nations are scrambling to rebuild decaying roads and bridges, while developing nations are putting in infrastructure for the first time. Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) raised USD4 billion earlier this month for a private-equity infrastructure fund. With the potential diversification that investing in infrastructure offers, a handful of ETFs have emerged in the field. However, these funds have some important differences, so it pays to look at them carefully before investing.
High-grade corporate bonds eye perfect storm
Thu, 15 May 2008, 15:32 Index Universe After a yearlong rush to safety by bond investors, Treasuries are losing some of their luster. Since mid-March, yields on 10-Year Treasury notes have jumped nearly 20%. At the same time, corporate bond yields are falling. In the case of junk bonds, that's been especially true. The average yield on the iShares iBoxx InvesTop High Yield Corporate Bond (AMEX: HYG) exchange-traded fund has dropped around 10% in that period.
