The founder of New York-based Arx Investment Management, who previously spent 16 years at Morgan Stanley, plans to shut down the Arx Global High Yield Master Securities Fund, which has gained 150 per cent since its launch in February 2002, by June 30. His brother and fellow Morgan Stanley alumnus, Scott Sipprelle, shut down his own firm Copper Arch late last year.

ETF providers roll out fixed-income offerings

Investors.com/Investor's Business Daily

Municipal bonds and short selling are likely to be the next growth area for fixed-income exchange traded funds and notes. Fixed-income ETFs have made a big splash over the last year. In 2007, less than a dozen ETFs were in the field, covering only the most liquid markets. Now there are 58. Munis have been one beneficiary. Barclays Global Investors, State Street Global Advisors and Van Eck Global have all launched general muni bond ETFs over the last several months.

US investors large and small will soon have an alternative to investing in platinum futures, almost solely traded by large hedge funds and brokerage houses. Russia ETF surges on oil, new president

Thu, 08 May 2008, 21:52

Smart Money

A new president in Russia, reports detailing an uptick in consumer lending in Poland, record-high oil prices and news Slovakia may adopt the euro as its currency made Eastern Europe and Russia leading gainers Thursday. Market Vectors Russia (RSX: 54.30, +2.30, +4.42%), an ETF that owns 31 firms — mostly in the energy sector — that have market caps over $150 million, gained 4% in heavy trading. SPDR S&P Emerging Europe (GUR: 67.50, +2.56, +3.94%) jumped 3.7%. That ETF owns companies in Russia, Poland, Turkey, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Frontier market ETFs and new access to related themes

Thu, 08 May 2008, 21:07

Seeking Alpha/Index Universe

WisdomTree has filed for the Middle East Dividend Fund that will include Bahrain, Dubai, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The prospectus has no info on country weightings (none that I found anyway), but surprisingly 54% of the companies have market caps greater than USD2 billion. WisdomTree has an awful lot of very interesting funds on the shelf that I'd love to see listed, but thus far have not. Some of the filings are so old now that I doubt they will list, so we'll see if this Middle East fund ever lists or not.

ETF strategy aims to profit from USD4 gas

Thu, 08 May 2008, 19:46

SmartMoney

The ETF industry has been accused of launching products simply for the sake of getting a certain strategy to market. That's one of the reasons dozens of funds languish with little assets and thin trading volumes. However, it scored a home run when fund companies like PowerShares, State Street (STT: 72.73, -1.27, -1.71%) and Barclays (BCS: 36.19, -0.24, -0.65%) launched commodity ETFs that track everything from gold and silver to cattle and crops to oil and gas. As a group these funds hold well over USD30 billion.

Clear Indexes LLC announces winners of second ETF student contest

Thu, 08 May 2008, 12:00

Yahoo/PRWeb

Two York University students and sports enthusiasts turned their passion and knowledge into the winning entry in the "Next Generation ETF Contest" run on Facebook and the Internet by Clear Indexes, LLC. Their winning idea, an International Sports investment concept, focuses on publicly-traded equities of holding companies that own professional sports teams and clubs; it relies on the large and loyal fan base of these teams, which typically grow even in economic downturns. Selected from nearly 200 submissions, Sean Vrbica, and Vlad Berbece teamed up to win the grand prize of USD5,000, a paid internship, and the chance to participate in an exchange bell ringing ceremony of the ETF based on their concept.
